There are the tomatoes and the potatoes of the veggie world, and then there are the others - lesser known, out of the ordinary, not easily available and almost elitist. But nothing out of reach if you are at the Gourmet Station fruit and vegetables counter, 'specialty' is a given! It is where quality vegetables from across the world share aisle space.
A select mix of vegetables and fruits from Holland, France and Peru, among other exotic destinations, await the keen-eyed customer. Displayed are berries, baby vegetables, sprouts, herbs and gourmet mushrooms to name but a few.
Vegetables
The specialty range of vegetables include asparagus from Peru, Romanesco, baby Pak Choy & Lemon Balm from France, extra fine beans from Kenya, Cassava, Rhubarb & Banana plantains from Holland, Jicama Root from Mexico, Italian Black Cabbage, Cima De Rapa, Puntarelle, Olive Taggiasche & Broccolini from Australia and Thai Baby Asparagus.
From France and Italy we have Olive Shallot, Banana Shallot, Pearl Onions & Red Onions.
A brimming variety of mushrooms on offer are the Shitake, Enoki, Grey Oyster, Giant, Pom Pom Blanc, Portobello, Girolles, Pied Blue, Pied de Mouton, Yellow Chantrelle, Ceps, Black Trumpet & Fresh Morels.
Sprouts of varying types, and herbs from France and Cyprus are stocked alongside a colourful army of tomatoes. A variety of French specialty potatoes such as La Ratte, Rosevalt, Violet & Charollete, plus the Australian Desirie variety can also be found here.
Gourmet Station houses a large range of baby vegetables like leeks, fennel, artichoke, and mix peppers. Edible flowers like the zucchini flower are also on offer.
In the Fruit section are citrus fruits like blood oranges, clementines, Kumquats and Lychees. Besides the regular apples, you can spot the Golden Rose, Brae burn and Choupette. The Rubinette, exceptional in taste and developed in Switzerland is also found at the Gourmet Station.
